Due to security in the 3rd Edition of S60, applications must be signed before they can be installed. Although most commercial programmes
are already signed, there is a lot of useful freeware where that still must be done for the particular IMEI.
Manual:
!!! PLEASE CONSIDER THAT SS HAS CHANGED ITS SYSTEM. This tutorial is currently only working, if you already own a developer certificate. In all other cases, follow the steps described in my working Open Signed Online tutorial. !!!
First download the necessary software:
1. Enter
http://rapidshare.com/files/34806908/SignSIS-GUI_v1.1.exe.html in the web browser.
2. Click on the “Free” Button.
3. Wait until the download is ready.
4. Choose a download provider.
5. Enter the security code and choose “Download via…”.
Then install the downloaded program on your computer.
For the registration at Symbian Signed, a special email address is required, because SS does not want anybody to register. That’s why most of the famous freemail addresses are locked.
However, a solution is to register a 2ip.com email address.
Follow these steps to register:
6. Open http://www.2ip.com/index.htm in your web browser and choose “Signup now!”
7. Choose a “domain category”.
8. Enter your desired username and choose a domain you like.
9. Fill in the rest of the required fields.
10. Accept the terms of servie and click on “Register”.
11. Confirm the next to boxes.
12. Click on “Mail Account”
13. Fill in your desired information.
14. Click on “Create Mailbox”.
Now you can use your mailbox to register a Symbian Signed account, an activation code will be sent to your address:
15. Open https://www.symbiansigned.com/app/page in the web browser.
16. Click on “Register now”.
17. Type in your registered email address an click on “OK”.
To receive your activation code go on like this:
18. Open http://www.2ip.com/mailmanager.php in the web browser, at best in a new tab.
19. Enter your password and click on “Webmail Login”.
20. Choose the email from Symbian Signed, mark the activation code and copy it to the clipboard.
21. Change to the Symbian Signed registration tab again and paste the activation code.
22. Fill in the fields marked with a star.
23. Enter the security code.
24. Click on “View legal agreement”, scroll to the bottom of the page and click on “I accept”.
25. Finish the registration with a click on “Register now”.
Completing your registration you can start the proper signing:
26. Start “DevCertRequestControl”.
27. Click on DevCert Request.
28. Type in your IMEI which you can figure out by pressing *#06# on your mobile phone keyboard and click on “OK”.
The Programm does now some steps automatically. If the following window appears
a mouse click has been executed. To finish this step succesfully, repeat the steps 19 and 20. This window should appear then:
Now you must login at the Symbian Signed page:
29. Enter username (= your wohle email address) and password and click on “Login”.
30. Back in the DevCertRequestControl click on the upload link.
31. Enter the security code.
32. Click on “Browse…/Durchsuchen…” (or whatever the word means in your language)
33. Choose the Cert Request file (*.csr). If you use Windows Vista, it should be located in “Users\Documents”. In case you use Windows XP, search it in “My Documents”.
34. Click on “Send”.
35. Click on “Download” to download the certificat, choose the folder and click on “Save”.
36. Choose “SignSIS”
37. Save the settings for the IMEI where necesary as a profil.
38. “DevCert:” indicate the path of the just downloaded certificat file.
39. If the field is empty, choose the *.key file which is located in C:\Program Files\SignSIS-GUI\SignSIS.key.
40. Indicate the path of the unsigned file you want to sign.
41. Choose the path of the signed file.
42. Finish the signing procces with a click on “SignSIS”.
That’s it. When you want to sign application once again, of course it is only required to do the steps 26, 36-42.
I hope my tutorial was helpful and you understand how to sign now. If not, leave a comment.

Hi
I was following your tutorial and i have already the *.cer file but i can not find the *.key file . I am checking in C:\Program Files\SignSIS-GUI and there is not *.key file.
How can i get the key file? and key
December 14, 2007 at 9:37 pm |
Then you must do steps 27 and 28 once again. At the following automatically done steps, in the second window, there is typed: “Private Key File:” and there you can see the path of the key file.

Seems to be because of the application you want to install. Try a different one that you can disbar signing as reason.

Hey
Ive got to step 34 but i just get a msg up saying, Request unsuccesful. only one IMEI per request.
What does this mean?
February 10, 2008 at 11:11 am |
well i managed to get access to the site but i am getting failure reason:
Only one IMEI is allowed per request or something similar to that.
I deleted my csr file and recreated it by typing in my IMEI in the format of ******-**-******-* clicked ok waited without moving my mouse till i got the finished message, re uploaded the file to symbian but still same error.
Is it possible that i am getting this message casue of the maintenance or am i doing something wrong ?
February 10, 2008 at 3:39 pm |

Thanks for the tutorial! As Loke says, symbian site is closed until the 11th, but I am waiting to try. One question – at step 37 I am not quite sure what to do. Do I put the IMEI number from my phone there again?

i think that even a mouse click ‘breaks’ the creation of the certificate. Try clicking the ok and wait without using the mouse till u get the finished message. If that fails also wait for an asnwer by bery95

From Symbian Signed:

Developer Certificate creation has been disabled temporarily again (15:00 UK Time 11th Feb) and will be re-enabled on 12th February at approximately 08:00 UK Time. We apologise for the contining problems, this measure has been taken to ensure that the site is stable for Express and Certified Signed submissions.

I’ve got the same problem as Rohit. The request upload button doesnt seem to be doing anything. Is it me, or are more people encountering this? Thanks in advance. Cant wait to actually manage to sign something. Thats if i ever do.
February 19, 2008 at 3:09 pm |
okay i’ve managerd to download the certificate. it worked with internet explorer, but not firefox.
However, now that i’m trying to sign Fexplorer, and it says signsis encountered an error and Fexplorer is not a SIS file. My head hurts.
February 19, 2008 at 4:26 pm |
Did you download the 3rd edition version? I don’t think so.
For all of you: SS is offline, it’s not possible to download certificates at the moment.
February 19, 2008 at 10:25 pm |
I’m getting the error ‘Could not verify signature with known algorithm, exiting. verification failure, invalid signature’
I’ve seen I should reinstall SignSIS. I can’t find an uninstall – do I just delete the directory? I tried this and then installed again and it made no difference.
Do I need to regenerate the certificate from the SS site after reinstalling SignSIS? Pain if so – it’s taken 4 days to get a foot in the door and upload my request today.
Thanks.

You gotta get a Publisher ID. Which is about $200.
So no signing till they change it.
February 29, 2008 at 6:56 pm |
Is there any other way to sign all my applications free without having a publisher ID
February 29, 2008 at 9:49 pm |
At the moment not, but have a look at the front page. SS is working on the problem.
March 1, 2008 at 2:43 am |
So to transfer any application , theme, game, wallpaper(?), or music file (?)
ON TO YOUR OWN n95 PHONE
you gotta pay them $200 for a developer ID?
What a hassle

March 5, 2008 at 7:29 pm |
There were lot of problems with viruses and various malwares on the 2nd edition and I guess that they have decided to stop it and increase the security level on the 3rd edition.
Here is the little copy/paste from my N93 review:
http://www.symbian-freak.com/reviews/n93/n93_review_01.htm
The last and the most annoying thing abut 3rd edition is the new platform security system, which is based on the idea that nobody gets access to those data caged directories. This is quite an annoying issue in my personal opinion; it is like having Windows without having access to system or program files directory!? Actually it drops down our so called ’smart phones’ to the ‘dummy’ s40 level and make it impossible to get the most out of our favourite devices by modding and tweaking them to meet our needs.
Anyway, I have to admit that the so called power users are minority in the really huge S60 family and the Nokia mainly takes care about the majority and from that point of view new security measures and all stuff related to data caged directories looks as a really cool and nice security measure.
After all, as the power user I have to say that I’m deeply disappointed with these new measures same as the whole Symbian Freak community, they should leave to us an option to choose between full security and full access. I just hope that it will be fixed somehow soon or later, otherwise I really doubt in further leading position of Symbian OS among the power user population. After all we spend lot of money for our lovely phones and it is our right to even smash it on the flor and jump over it until the beast dies, so please at least give us an option to take the control over our files.
March 5, 2008 at 7:33 pm |
lets wait for a miracle to happen and ss to return back

March 7, 2008 at 9:40 pm |
This is very stupid, the way symbian does things. Understood it wanted to prevent malware apps but to makes it so hard to install freeware or freeware dev to get their apps useful for user. Does anyone knows any other way to install software to N95 without needing cert?

everyone is currently unable to sign apps, unless they have a publisher id which apparently costs $200 im happy to wait around instead of downloading an apparently already signed version which could turn out to mess up my phone, which i dont fancy happening.
thankyou very much bery95 for the tut, it was very helpful, until i encountered the small problem of not having the publisher id lol

Request DevCert
Your request has failed. Reason:
-Developer Certificates will be ENABLED for users who have a Publisher ID ONLY
-ONLY if you used a Publisher ID to create a .csr file with the DevCertCreate tool will you be able to use Open Signed Offline to create a Developer Certificate.
-Developer Certificates are currently DISABLED for users without a Publisher ID. Users who DO NOT have a Publisher ID CANNOT request Developer Certificates or use Open Signed Offline.
-If you have recently obtained a Publisher ID and are unable to create a Developer Certificate using Open Signed Offline please request support through the Symbian Signed forum on the Symbian Developer Network here

Come one guys, it’s all written ahead and also mentioned at least ten times in the comments. You CANNOT create a certificate at the moment without a Publisher ID. Use the linked tutorial ahead to sign your applications with Open Signed.

Thx biran.

Acutally it’s not necessary to help you with this problem, because you won’t be able to create a certificate. Use my Open Signed Online tutorial to sign your applications.

July 1, 2008 at 11:20 am |
wow, i never thought signing application could be this troublesome! all this for a call manager!
The guide is really helpful, but i think you should insert the Publisher ID signing guide in between steps 29-30 so that people wont be confused or ask a lot of questions.
just a suggestion, but otherwise a really handy guide
the publisher ID signing guide is another nose bleeding guide!
you must also have net 3.5 framework for it to work.
