Phones like the N82, N95, N95 8GB or also E90 are running with the great CPU Texas Instruments OMAP 2420. This CPU has an integrated 3D accelerator which can execute highly expensive graphical operations.
This topic is especially interesting considering the thing that the phones mentioned ahead are all real power phones being able to display very impressive graphics. That is actually the perfect condition for the new N-Gage platform to create games in an optical dimension never seen before on a mobile handset.
But because Nokia decided to make the gaming platform also available for low-performance phones like the N81 and N73, both running with a non 3D accelerated CPU, all games that are currently available don’t use the possibility of 3D acceleration. That’s why all the games look much worse than they could do.
I found a nice video on YouTube showing the differences between a phone with 3D acceleration (N95) and a non accelerated one (N81).
The video shows a 3D demo running on both phones. A large speed difference is clearly recognizable: the N95 displays the demo smoothly, the N81 in contrast with regular and noticeable lags.
This video is just one more prove about how an accelerated phone is so much more capable in displaying 3D content. I really hope Nokia will publish a version of N-Gage games like “ONE” which uses the 3D accelerator after a while. (They do exist, there are videos!).
At the moment they are still trying to make an N81 as attractive as possible, it’s clear that an attraction to buy it would be even smaller with these much better looking game versions.

Problem is that, as I remember, in the Q&A session with the N96 product manager, he said that the N96 doesn’t have 3D acceleration. Do you still think that there will be an accelerated version of Ngage? Naaa not in the near future @ least, nokia won’t wanna kill the N96 before it’s even released because people will probably go running back to the n95s
Oh and yes I have had my hands on both N95 and N81. I played one game: Global Race Raging thunder, the N95 played it as smooth as it could, the N81 agonized while playing it. So yes the difference is VERY noticeable.
Maybe there will be an accelerated version of some games a few months after the Touch devices come to the market, because the touch UI also comes with hardware acceleration and sensor technology

N96 does have a 3d accelerator. its codenamed SVA(smart video accelerator). New thing about this handset is that it is not based on TI’s chip rather STMicro’s Nomadic chip which is quite a good chip.

@ Rita
I have also heard about the lack of 3D acceleration talking about the N96. This would of course be a reason for Nokia not to release an 3D accelerated version.
Well, still it’s not 100% sure I think.

Hmm…I never heard of graphic acceleration for phones.

I was in the room when he said no 3D acceleration. Still can’t believe it! I’m not much into gaming but still. Plus i really like to use core player to run unedited movies on the phone, i guess that will take a hit too.

Yeah, I remember days when I have discovered that Nokia n93 has the 3d hardware accelerated graphic, people just didn’t believe me it is true
Here is the more than two years old article about OMAP 24230 and hardware accelerated graphic.
