This message addresses to all SWB readers as we have got plans affecting the future of this blog.
The success of Symbian Web Blog was very surprising for me. After only 3-4 months the number of visitors is higher than of many other Symbian blogs and is constantly growing. Also SWB has already reached place 87 977 in blog rankings, also fastly rising.
It’s great pleasure for me to see this great success, although there are so many other blogs dealing with Symbian news. It want to thank all my readers for this daily approbation which often gives me the motivation to write something, although I completely don’t feel like it.
This huge success has made me thinking about moving SWB to a different server. I am planning to register my own domain without the nerving “wordpress” addition.
This new domain would bring a lot of advantages for me as blogger and for you as readers. The WordPress.com blog hosting service has many limits I am experiencing every day. Using WordPress with my own domain would bring a lot of advantages:
Nicer Theme:
I am already working at my very own WordPress theme. The current one I am using is not nasty, but also far away from looking good.
The new theme will not only look much better, but will also offer you a rise of clearness so that the blog will be better readable.
Web space:
You may have noticed that I am often uploading things to hosting services like Rapidshare, because WordPress.com supports only picture upload.
Having my own web space would mean downloads of all provided applications from a high speed server without the need of using Rapidshare for you, my readers.
Plugins:
The WordPress comunity is large. There are many useful plugins available which will facilitate site navigation a lot and provide larger reading comfort.
There are still more advantages I don’t want to mention here. However, you can see that a move of SWB provides much more than you currently receive here.
I want to know your opinion about such a server movement Good idea? Maybe somebody has already experience with such a server move?
The disadvantage for me is that I cannot forward the WordPress.com blog to the new domain, so I will start completely from the beginning again.
At the moment I am one of the first to be found in search engines, with a move results of SWB won’t be as easy findable. It’s clear that the result would be a decrease of visitors.
All in all, I am convinced of the idea, but as I said, PLEASE tell me your opinion. Don’t shrink back from commenting, I am happy about every single answer.
Best Regards,
bery95

Great, thx for your opinion.
March 17, 2008 at 8:44 pm |
plz dont chance the look of webpage much and leave it simple.
March 17, 2008 at 8:46 pm |
Well I recommend removing the domain Name you want to register right now from the post, as People might take steps and register for themselves!!
And congrats on the potential move!
March 17, 2008 at 8:46 pm |
Agreed, thats good news if WE are moving to new server, can have more graphics at own domain and also many other features as you mentioned.
Uploads are not a major issue though, we have plenty of file sharing sites rather than rapidshare or etc.
I agree with your Idea and you will be certainly Rock the Search engines in no time..
For sometime you can Post important topics in this webpress blog and can redirect to your Own domain, this will help irregular visitors know about your New site

Move move move!
March 17, 2008 at 9:14 pm |
That’s indeed a very good idea! As far as I’m concerned, using your own domain would make your blog more official and the popularity of SWB would grow at even a faster pace.
There are few things that I like and dislike about your blog that I think worth mentioning. Firstly, I really the way that you keep your posts as uncluttered as possible and I can find and read things without any hassle. Other positive things are the three useful and informative sections (AOTW, Noob Section, Tutorials) on your blog. Of the three, I like AOTW section the most, it helps Sybmbian users to find out about almost unknown applications with great usability. As for the downsides, the only thing that your blog lacks is full content RSS, I don’t know why some blogs only allow partial content in their RSS feeds. That’s all.
Nevertheless, feel free to contact me for logo design. I’d like to somehow contribute to your blog.

Do it. We’ll find you
March 17, 2008 at 9:22 pm |

@Robert
I will do everything to improve my feed, actually I didn’t care about it much…
@farhaz
I have already thought about a good system to move people to the new blog.
March 17, 2008 at 10:04 pm |
Good idea to move in my opinion, you should be able to export posts from WordPress.com into a new WordPress blog hosted elsewhere. Might be worth googling this / checking support pages?
March 17, 2008 at 10:19 pm |
Correct, that should be possible, I have already looked for this. Great you all like the idea.
March 17, 2008 at 10:25 pm |
i love this blog as it is, but i’d appreciate changes, too
March 17, 2008 at 10:26 pm |
having a own space is thousans times better than to stay on e free platform, good luck mate!
March 17, 2008 at 10:31 pm |
Do as you wish Bery, but I hope you keep the simplicity of your blog – it’s one of the reasons that this is my favourite Symbian content blog.
March 17, 2008 at 10:31 pm |

March 17, 2008 at 10:43 pm |

Wow! Congratulations!
I can only agree with everybody else. Move!
Oh, and one more thing: join Jaiku if you haven’t already. Email me for an invite. There are a lot of people there that have hosted wordpress blogs (and others that are just moving), maybe you’d get some help. Plus, the community rocks!
March 18, 2008 at 8:43 am |
Wow, Saudi Arabia.
@ Vlad
Thanks for your help, basically it’s very easy. I have already hosted WordPress on a free hoster to try everything. The only hard thing is to create the theme, but Sittiphol is going to help me after finishing his Thesis.
March 18, 2008 at 10:41 am |
Congratulation….
Your blog is fantastic..
March 18, 2008 at 10:54 am |
Thx.
March 18, 2008 at 1:40 pm |
As the previously comments said, you can bet your a… that in a short period everybody will be able to find you.
Generally moving to an own domain will give u more freedom (from physical/psych point of view meaning creativity, layout etc.) as you already know.
So go ahead and keep up the goood work!
March 18, 2008 at 1:45 pm |
I will try it.
However, will still take some time until I finished my theme…
March 18, 2008 at 1:48 pm |
Leave it the way it is.
March 18, 2008 at 1:51 pm |
As everyone is happy for you to change it, i take my words and you shall change but only if you think it is better for us.
March 18, 2008 at 2:36 pm |
the RSS thing is my own main concern.
I’ll really appreciate if you enable full content via RSS right away. . . cos it actually prevents me from reading your articles except ones that REALLY interest me. i hate clicking through to read.
overall, you’ve got a very informative blog. keep it up in your new zones. . . and please, enable full rss content.
Thanks

Hi bery95,
I knew SWB just for a month, but I like it very much. The good things of SWB I like most are:
– News are updated nicely fast > Helps me update Symbian News very quickly.
– Nice blog interface. Simple theme but looks good, the Blog’s contents are arranged tidily, clear and easy to view
It’s good for SWB to have an own domain and server. But, please keep those above good things remained.
Thanks!
TDNC

@Ezra
Full content RSS slows down PC much… I am discovering that often and I don’t really like it.
Am I wrong when I say that this will keep many people away to visit my “real” site?
March 18, 2008 at 5:22 pm |
@bery95
I dont think Full content RSS slows down the PC in any way. Even mobile devices can have full RSS Readers installed.
What do you stand to lose by people not visiting your real site? There are currently no adverts and if you want to advertise with RSS, you could register with feedburner. Moreso, you even get more hits as the RSS readers on individual users’ PCs will make connections to your site on regular basis, other than the user having to click-thru when he/she remembers. Currently, your blog is the only one on my feedreader that syndicates partial content. Normally, i delete others, but i love yours.
March 18, 2008 at 10:15 pm |
I will consider this. However, all the large Symbian blogs like AAS and SF have part content RSS.
I have no experience with both, maybe I have to try both out.
March 18, 2008 at 10:30 pm |
i’ll really appreciate. some pple (like me) live on RSS readers.
. Thanks as you try it out.
