Yesterday the successful Nokia Beta Laps department has released another very cool application for users of accelerometer supporting phones, in other words the N82, N95 and N95 8GB.
Nokia Step Counter does what it says on the tin: it counts the number of steps you take by analyzing how you ’shake’ your phone. Since most people have their phone with them everywhere they go, it is natural to use the accelerometer in an S60 product to track your daily activity by showing you how much you walk or run about your daily life.
However, the Nokia Step Counter not only counts your steps, it also determines the distance you have covered and your energy expenditure. You can even compare your activity levels on different days by looking up the summaries stored in a handy diary.
Want to know how it all works? Your steps are measured by analyzing the output from an accelerometer in your S60 mobile device. All you have to do is carry your phone around with you whenever you move, for example in a pocket of your clothing, attached to a belt or your upper arm, or in a handbag worn over your shoulder.
Nokia Step Counter:

Everything about the application reminds me of the “Activity Monitor”. It looks the same, it does the same, only a few new features are available. I don’t know why Nokia released it as a complete new application though.
Anyway, the first menu point displays always how many steps you have done today. Selecting the point will lead to a more detailed overview which shows you not only the number of steps, but also the “Step Time”, the “Energy” you wasted and the “Distance”.

New features are above all a lot more diagrams to analyse your daily steps. Among them is a bar diagram that tells you how fast you are walking.

The “Step Count Today” window shows how far you are still away from reaching your “Step Target”.

Yes, you can set how many steps you want to walk per day in the settings menu.

The application offers also a “Diary” same as the “Sports Tracker” which show detailed information for one day.
I have already liked the “Activity Monitor” application and “Step Counter” is even a little bit better. I highly recommend everyone who uses an N82, N95 or N95 8Gb to download this application here.

Indeed very accurate. Put your phone into your pocket and step detection will be very good.
