How get the latest Nokia Software Updater working on Windows Vista

I think most of you who use Microsoft’s Windows Vista are aware of the problem that Nokia has recently removed the official support of Vista for the Nokia Software Updater, the application to self-update the firmware of your S60 device.

This is a response to a configuration change of Vista which expresses the top of the huge compatilibity problems between the desktop operating system and the updater.

In practice this means that you can currently not start the application when using Windows Vista, the following error message will appear:

However, there is an easy way to get the Nokia Software Updater start on Vista also at the moment. Be aware that Nokia has of course had its reasons to remove the support and that the following steps will just show you how to start the application. Possible problems can anyhow occure for which I and Nokia don’t assume any responsibilty.

Just follow the next steps which are unfortunately only explained with German screenshots, because I wasn’t able to change the language of Vista that quickly. It should anyway be easy to understand.

Start the Nokia Software Updater using Windows Vista:

Right click on the “Nokia Software Updater” desktop icon and select “Properties” from the appearing menu.

Switch to the “Compatilibity” tab, set a hook at ”Run this program in compatilibity mode for:” and select “Windows XP (Service Pack 2)”. Confirm by clicking on “OK”.

Now you can launch the “Nokia Software Updater” and it will start like you know it from older versions. Happy updating! ;)

I think the non-support for Vista will of course be just for a short period of time, because the operating system is already widely spread on computers and so it’s an urgent problem. As long as Vista isn’t supported, I hope I could help you with my little guide.

  2. Apoc' Says:

Not the very smart move Berry, it is removed with reason and I can’t recommend to anyone to follow this guide and flash phone under Vista, especially if you leave in area without Nokia Service center!!

  3. Apoc' Says:

    @Alan,

Cable drivers maybe!? Try to get latest driver and reinstall it?

  4. Alan Says:

i already installed and uninstalled NSU …when it reinstalls , it installs the latest cable drivers …. i dunno what 2 do ??

  5. bery95 Says:

I also had problems with Vista and NSU and honestly was never able to solve them, sorry.

    @ Apoc

Problems with NSU and Vista were acutally always restricted to starting problems. When the NSU starts on Vista, flashing should work without problems. That’s why there shouldn’t be any problems when following this guide.

  6. Apoc' Says:

NO, tend to disagree with you, the problem with nsu is related to brick issue which is much more often on the Vista than on the XP actually most of the brick issue are caused by the Vista itself.

Once again would not recommend it to anyone!!!

  7. bery95 Says:

I did never deny it’s caused by Vista. I just said that the problems occure when starting the NSU and NOT while flashing what causes the risk.

  8. Mr-X Says:

I’ve had no problems with NSU on Vista, Teo. Flashed my N95 8GB over 5 times with NSU and had no problems.

  9. iRoox Says:

Didn’t work for me either :(

  10. bery95 Says:

It’s not a guide how to solve problems with Vista in general. It’s just a guide how to bypass Nokia’s non support for Vista.

  11. Ryan Says:

will this guide work? has anyone tried using it?
    thanks

  12. bery95 Says:

Oh yes, I can confirm it. ;) And also other people have done so.

But please bear in mind that there are starting problems with Vista which won’t be solved by the guide. It focuses on bypassing Nokia’s lock to use the NSU with Vista.

  20. Dave Says:

I managed to get it to start up by changing the port range that its service process is using. Haven’t yet tried to flash, but it gets past the “Starting application…” bit at the least. I modified

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Nokia\Service Layer\A\nsl_config.cfg

changing the ports so they’re in the 50000 range instead of the 60000 range:

    A

    ladies and gentlemen ,
(sorry if i made any spelling problems)

first you have to run properties and check Compatibility mode and disable desktop composition
    and check run as administrator.

after that press ‘win + r’ to bring up the run ,
type ‘ncpa.cpl’ this will open the network and sharing center lock for manage connections , if it opens the connections list from the beginning it is good so see which connection you are using and right click on it see the sharing tab and un-check the sharing options then press ok and try to run the program and tell me what you have got.

    with my best wishes
