Samsung investigates more and more in the smartphone market and introduces apart from Windows Mobile based phones also Symbian S60 modells like their impressive flagship G810 which is based on S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 and brings a lot of features that we only knew from Nokia’s Nseries before.
You may remember that another S60 based modell has been spotted at the Tele-Vision in Nieuwegein. Parts of the Samsung L870 became already common there, however there were still a lot of unanswered questions about Samsung’s latest S60 smartphone.
Mobil.cz has now managed to get the full feature list plus a further picture of the slider phone in his whole beauty which shows also the whole keypad.
Special about the Samsung L870 which is like we know it from Samsung built out of high quality materials with a metall cover, the touchpad which replaces the navigation keys. Personally I don’t like touch keys, because they don’t give the user a confirmation of their inputs. I think we still have to see how the pad will act in practice.

Very interesting seems to be that according to Mobil.cz the L870 is the first non Nokia phone that is based on the latest version of the S60 UI, the Feature Pack 2.
The slider phone will unfortunately only work in three GSM frequencies (900/1800/1900) and is therefore no quadband phone like actually all current modells. Furthermore, it has UMTS and HSDPA support with bandwiths up to 3.6 Mbps.
The other features sound less impressive and let us class the L870 as a mid-range device:
The little 2.3 inch display has a QVGA resolution and offers apart from that only 262 000. Sounds pretty poor compared to phones like the N95 which have already reached a number of 16 million display colours.
Matching to a mid-range phone, it features a 3.2 MP camera, but I still don’t know anything about further specifications like an autofocus, although I really hope so. The front camera will offer video calls in VGA resolution.

An overworked music player and an FM radio with RDS support which still lacks current Nseries devices lets music fans get their money’s worth. Office users will be satisfied with a document browser for Word and Excel files.
The built in phone memory whose size isn’t known yet can be extended with MicroSD cards. Connectivity solutions acquires Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 2.0.
Of course the features cannot compete with a flagship phone and Samsung’s G810 seems to remain the high-end modell of the Korean phone maker which is based on the S60 UI. However, Samsung hopes to score with a nice design and a solid device which is built out of noble materials. That’s still the point where Samsung can hurt Nokia’s feature focused Nseries whose building quality suffered huge problems in the last years.
Probably the Samsung L870 will be officially presented at the Communic Asia which starts at the 17th of June.
