Next Nseries Device to be the Nokia N85 with WQVGA Resolution?

We are still concentrating on the N78 and N96 as upcoming Nseries devices in the near future, when there are already very interesting news over at the Mobile-Review forums which make us already face the next generation of Nokia’s multimedia line.

Eldar, the administrator of Mobile-Review, is obviously one of the best informed persons in the mobile scene and has posted some very interesting facts about the phones coming after the N78 and N96.

He talks about a Nokia N85 that will have a display with WQVGA resolution what means about 432×240 pixels. The display seems to have a widescreen format regarding the display’s resolution which is developed to provide a great video playback experience.

Eldar says that he likes the N85 much better than the N96. Also the price shall be lower than the one of the officially announced flagship. He didn’t talk about which phone the N85 shall replace, only that it won’t be the N82.
Furthermore he talks about a massively improved UI with more animations which delivers a fresh look for the “classic” S60 user interface.

Also he said something about Nokia’s S60 Touch line. He doesn’t like “Tube”, the first S60 Touch device, and confirms that the first high-end touch phone will come after Tube’s release.
He also gives a hint that newer phone will have the rumoured Kastor UI which looks absolutely amazing:

I think we can trust Eldar as he is a very well informed and reliable source. So everybody who thought about buying Tube or the N96 should think twice about it. The S60 phones after the ones which will be released in the near future seem to be much more promising.

I am looking forward to getting more information about possible new phones, very interesting indeed!

So, N85 will probably sport S60 5th Edition? Any info on the hardware?

  2. bery95 Says:

No, I don’t think it will be a touch device. S60 5th Edition phones will have “real” high resolution screens like Tube already has one.

I posted everything Eldar said about hardware, so I can’t tell you more than what I have already did, sorry. :(

  3. Apoc' Says:

AS I have already said few times over at Symbian Freak forum I had it in my hands together with tube and another Nseries device and to answer on your question no, it is not 5th ed phone. Great phone, great screen, ecen greater camera and what I really like about this phone is its cool code name ;)

    Teo

  4. bery95 Says:

Wow, you had the N85 in your hands, Teo?

  5. Apoc' Says:

I’ll have to kill you if I tell you :]

Let’s say that I know all about two upcoming Nseries phones but unfortunately I am not allowed to talk about. There are also some Symbina powered phones out of Nseries family and of course, the high end touch device that will run 5th edition.

  6. GforGood Says:

Actually, Eldar did NOT say N85 will run Kastor (he said it sort of resembles it/that Kastor gives you a bit of an idea).

Also, you should get away from the mind of every phone being a direct successor or a replacement of a previous one. That is simply not the way it works in a lot of cases.

Anyway, I agree: very exiting tid bits of information! :)

  7. K FLYER Says:

Thanks Teo for the info. And bery95, it’s not only Teo and Eldar who saw this lineup of phones, but unfortunately, all of them are lips sealed. However, I got to know that there were some interesting devices. However, it’s a shame that the E71 will sport only a 2MP camera. Teo, could you please tell us whether any of these devices have any features beyond what current phones have? Any 5MP+ cams?

  8. bery95 Says:

    @ Teo

    Thanks.

    @ GforGood

Dunno whether you are sure, but I will check it.
I never said that a phone is always a successor of another one. It was just an information that Eldar gave that it won’t be the N82 and that was what I posted. I was happy about every information he gave. ;)

    @ K FLYER

Of course it’s not only been Teo and Eldar lol. And the E71 features a 3.2 MP camera. ;)

  9. K FLYER Says:

Oops, sorry, I’ve made a mistake. As Teo mentions, two N Series devices. One is the N85, but the other? However it must be lacking some features than the N85 and I’m not suprised if the latter (the unknown device) is launched first.

  10. Apoc' Says:

Yes as I said, two Nseries phones are on the way, one is going to be long awaited next flagship while another one isn’t that attractive, I guess it is clear enough because I am not even allowed to telly you the code names :(

But I can confirm that E71 features the 3.2 mpx cam, pretty compact device fits well in the hand :)

  11. bery95 Says:

Cool, thx Teo. So N85 will be the next flagship and N83 not so attractive I guess. :)

Why can Eldar talk about the two new Nseries while you can’t?

  12. K FLYER Says:

bery95, most of them don’t talk about those new devices and I’m sure even Eldar is talking about only to a certain limited extent.

  13. bery95 Says:

I would understand if nobody would talk about the unofficial devices. But it’s surprising for me that Eldar talks about it and Teo not, may it be still few information.

Teo could have at least written a little post which doesn’t contain much information over at SF. If Eldar is allowed to write something with limited extent, Teo should also be allowed or not?

  14. genXhippie Says:

“Teo could have at least written a little post which doesn’t contain much information over at SF. If Eldar is allowed to write something with limited extent, Teo should also be allowed or not?”

@bery95, I don’t get that either, actually. Good question though.

  15. Mike Says:

    amazing news.

@ Apoc. can you at least tell us if the camera is “up to par” with the n82’s, meaning does it have xenon?

  16. Mike Says:

oh and beryl can we get the link to the post @ Mobile Review. the one you have leads to a flickr image? thanks.

  17. K FLYER Says:

    Hello Everyone -

I know this comment of mine comes a bit late here in August, but I really wanted to buy an N78 only to become very disappointed (after hours of research) to learn that VoIP programs that once relied on Nokia’s inclusion of VoIP software in Symbian Series 60 has been REDACTED from Series 60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 2. Have a look at this Nokia Developer Forum thread, with this excerpt:

    http://discussion.forum.nokia.com/forum/showthread.php?p=455394

    > I’ve gone back to my E65 for now – maybe I’ll buy an N78 when they release
    > a full version of Symbian on this platform.
    >
    > It’s an interesting point about Android – will Symbian end up going down the
    > same path as Amiga and other technologies that have disappeared? If they
    > persist in deliberately crippling their OS (e.g. disabling VoIP) and frustrating
    > the end user, they can’t hope to do much better.

This really sucks for a company (Nokia) that is purporting to claim a lot of hype by allegedly releasing all of the Symbian software into an independent open source Symbian Foundation.

So does this mean that all of the new phones from Nokia in the N series, etc. are all going to be incapable of VoIP (or actually, they might be capable but Nokia has intentionally handicapped them and forcing the VoIP support to be written from scratch by the developer community instead of Nokia *SHARING* that VoIP software WITH the developer community in the spirit of open source? It is very sad to me that I can not use a Nokia N78 with Truphone or Gizmo, etc. over WiFi. It doesn’t make sense to me that the wireless telecos would force Nokia to redact VoIP because the N78 can be purchased unlocked unbranded at Nokia Flagship stores at least in the U.S. (Chicago and New York City).

@ Eddie, I don’t really know much about phones, but if you try to take a look at this link:
    http://thenokiablog.com/2008/08/26/top-5-reasons-why-nokia-n85-is-better-than-nokia-n96/
I think it says that the N85 supports VoIP, while the N96 doesn’t…

is it true that nokia already release n100 by now ?
