I have already told you my opinion about theme posting here at SWB, but I will repeat it once again. SWB focuses on cool applications, hardware news, tutorials and so on, and posts only about very exceptional themes. There are numerous other great sites which report about themes frequently like Symbianplanet by Mauikek.
Anyway, I know many S60 users are a radical enemy of Apple’s iPhone. But I also noticed that a lot of them also like the awesome touch control of the device and its menu design.
We are currently all waiting for Nokia to tell us more about their new S60 Touch UI. Their new kind of input will unique the great advantages of the S60 user interface and the touch control which has become so popular through the iPhone.
Now they have officially told us about the first device which support the new UI – It’s called “Tube”.
Shown in a slide at the Evans Data Developer Relations Conference in Redwood City, Calif., Tube looks similar to the popular iPhone. The Nokia device showed graphical displays, such as a promotion for the movie Shrekthe Third. Other capabilities will be featured, such as the ability to upload photos.
You know that Mobile World Congress is currently participating in Barcelona.
After lots of interesting announcements of new devices, another interesting part is the new S60 Touch UI which provides even better touch control than the iPhone with tactical feedback.
See into S60 has posted nice preview videos: one about the general S60 Touch UI and a sensors demo.
Unwiredview.com has managed to get details of the coming “Multi-Touch” technology which will work into the coming S60 Touch devices.
“Multi-Touch” will not only support the great features of the Apple iPhone like zooming with straddled fingers.
Because of built in sensors, an “S60 Touch” device actually doesn’t require any kind of typing, neither keys nor the screen. 3D gestures are detected and translated into various object oriented, or gesture/browsing oriented commands.
It is difficult to sum up this difficult topic without missing out something. So jump over to read the full article and experience more about Nokia’s innovative ideas.
I found a nice *.swf file called iLauncher. It simulates the standby screen and main menu of an iPhone. Most of the icons lead to the corresponding S60 applications. Only icons like YouTube have no function.
I tried a lot of iPhone “emulators”, but none of them worked as good as the iPhone launcher. It runs very quickly and leads responsibly to the right applications, for example “Text” -> “Messaging” or “Photos” -> “Gallery”.
You can also set the file as your screensaver.
Actually it works with Flash Lite 2 and 3, but unfortunately, the icons didn’t work with Flash Lite 3, so play the *.swf file with the built in Flash Player.
I just found a nice video on YouTube showing a FlashLite 3 application (like the iPhones Cover-Flow) which uses the N95’s accelerometer to play, pause and forward a track.
I looks really impressive, like an application of Samir. The name isn’t common yet, if you know it, please leave a comment.
Harry Salminen’s has written a very interesting hack which changes the N95’s browser to introduce itself as iPhone’s browser. That is possible, because both phones are based on the same source code.
The sence of all is, that Google pages are designed more pleasing for the iPhone and so you can acces these pages with your N95. Still not all content is displayed perfectly as you can see below.
Phonescoop has published a video showing a woman who describes the coming S60 Touch devices.
All the features of the N95 will be packed into devices you can manage with a touchscreen and additional keyboard, limited keyboard, full vertical keyboard, with a pen or, like an iPhone, just with your fingers.
Very nice and a little revolution in touchscreen devices is, that the screen gives a little vibrate pulse to confirm your clicks.
