Nokia Maps 2.0 leaves Beta State – Updates include enhanced Pedestrian Navigation, new Satellite Images and Support for integrated Compass Orientation

Nokia today announced that its highly anticipated update for Nokia Maps has left beta stage and is now ready for consumers to download.
 
Downloaded over 240,000 times since announced in February, Nokia Maps 2.0 has improved its optional Car Navigation, enhanced its pedestrian navigation, added multimedia city guides, now offers satellite images, and is sporting a redesigned user interface. Nokia’s mapping and navigation solutions give people navigation features, local content and world maps directly on their mobile device, in a way that only connected devices can.

Nokia unveils the World’s first Compass Phone

Standing at a Tube station with an A to Z, baffled as to which street to walk down, may soon be a thing of the past thanks to a technology which lets you orientate yourself in relation to your surrounds using your phone.

Nokia has unveiled the world’s first phone with a built-in compass, which will mean that owners can not only find out where they are but also gauge which direction they should walk in by lining up satellite images on their phone with the objects they see around them.

Nokia Phone Maps will get webbed Feet

Nokia is extending its mobile navigation system to the Web via its Ovi.com site, where people will be able to save map locations and routes and then synchronize them with their phones.

Maps on Ovi, unveiled Monday at the Where 2.0 conference in Burlingame, California, builds on Nokia’s next generation of mobile-phone navigation technology, Nokia Maps 2.0. It also signals Nokia’s growing focus on software and services, even for use independent of its mobile phones.

New Version of Nokia Maps v2.0 Beta released

I think you all know “Nokia Maps”, the own navigation software of the Finnish mobile giant which is preinstalled on every new S60 device.

The completely reworked version “Nokia Maps v2.0 Beta” has been relased some time ago which brought great new features and got very close to established applications like “Route 66″.
The current version v2.0 is still in beta state and so it’s clear that the version is still buggy and has not all the features that the final version will contain.

N95 8GB NAM comes with 6 Months of free Navigation

I have reported that the N95 8GB NAM is finally available in the US. The new version, also known as N95-4, brings 3G for the US (WCDMA).

Carmenta Mobile – The future of Mobile Maps

Wow, I just found an impressive video about a navigation engine which seems to make a large step in mobile navigation.

“Carmenta Mobile” is a high performance map engine for mobile phones, targeting companies that want to provide advanced Location Based Services applications around maps, routing and geocoding.

Maps are able to show real 3D buildings and landmarks and can be zoomed and turned steplessly – amazing!

Furthermore, the video at the bottom doesn’t show a normal map overview, but a Google Earth like look of the landscape. Only the close up view when the particular streets must be seen reminds of a normal navigation system.
